Ngwu Spring Natural Water, Nkwerre

Ngwu Spring Natural Water, Nkwerre

The Ngwu spring water known as “Iyi Umugara” by locals is found in Nkwere Town, Nkwerre LGA of Imo State. It is a sparkling natural water, pure and crystal-like. The stream formed by the cascading of the Ngwu spring water is a mystery because its volume and flow increases mostly during the dry season.

Ngwu is a natural spring water and only fail short of waterfall because it lacks the height of one. The stream formed by the cascading of the spring water has been described many as awesome and mysterious given the fact that even during the dry season, the flow rather than cease, increases and flows endlessly. Naturally other rivers and lakes would record a drop in volume of its water during the dry season when it sees a depletion of its supply from the natural sources of rain.

The base of the spring fall is about 40ft below the land surface. The journey to collecting the spring water used to be treacherous owing the slippery nature of the moody part and people in the past have been rescued from a deeper dark section of about 50ft (oku nwgu) from where the spring flows out to join Urashi river. However, the spring is now wearing great new looks with modern steps constructed with rails from the land surface down to the spring fall by an Illustrate son of Nkwerre Ancient Kingdom (Late Dr Ukaigwe). Therefore collecting the natural spring is now as easy as fetching water from a tap, except for walking down the steps, but that is a healthy exercise.

You really need to visit the spring to appreciate the beauty of nature’s gift to mankind. Nwanne, miri ngwu ru nma.
